Thinking in planning takes me to the core skill required to be successful in my career: Construction Engineering and Management. Through the experience at CEE 421 – Construction Planning different leadership abilities were improved. These abilities are self-managing my goals and interests, interacting and collaborating with other team members, understanding and strengthening relationships among peers, managing and supporting changes, and coming up with innovative / adaptive concepts to fulfill the requirements of the course projects. All these capabilities were achieved due to the experience as a team member during the academic period Fall 2017. This experience was successful thanks to the goals of the course focused on planning short, midterm, and long tasks / milestones / goals according to a determined type of construction project and controlling the achievement of these tasks / milestones / goals through the implementation of different techniques in scheduling.

How CEE421 Construction Planning enhanced my leadership experience? Throughout the development of two core leadership skills: Planning and Organizational control (change dynamics, relationship and change management).

One of the leadership approaches of the course relies on planning tasks and activities to execute milestones at different construction projects at short, midterm, and long-term time basis. The key to achieve this competency was working on groups to develop planning and scheduling skills for real construction projects. Achieving this goal required the conformation of different teams guided by a team leader, who was in charge of coordinating among the team members all those different aspects involved in planning and scheduling to complete the term project successfully. As a team member, I had to move forward with the team onto different situations where discrepancies diminished decision – making. Also, the collaboration with ideas to implement techniques to perform scheduling leveling (an optimized scheduling technique), and the analysis of its results was a deal that required the use of adaptive and innovative approaches.

Finally, another leadership objective accomplished through CEE 421 – Construction Planning is focused on organizational control by monitoring and evaluating the progress of the planned and scheduled milestones. To achieve this benefits we stablished internal schedules to evaluate the performance of the project, and the advancements of every task under the critical path method. This technique helped with understanding how dynamic in group management may change along the time, since the beginning of the project, where all team members showed willingness to participate and collaborate with the project, to moments where the amount of school work generated some unwillingness and lack of optimism to comply with the goals we set as a team. Is during this last moment when the identification of critical tasks and their path contributed to move forward with the work and achieve the targets we planned at the beginning of the project. So that, controlling the milestones throughout the implementation of critical path analysis approach improved the performance of the project and the team, which eventually allowed us to complete the goals of the project and accomplish its submission successfully.
